Coastal Waste Management on Small and Outside Islands (Case Study of Bonerate Village District Selayar Islands)

Coastal waste management plays an important role in maintaining environmental sustainability, public health, and community welfare, particularly in small island areas that are highly vulnerable to pollution. Bonerate Village, located in the Selayar Islands Regency, faces increasing pressure from domestic waste, limited waste handling facilities, and coastal activities that may contribute to environmental degradation. This study aims to analyze existing waste management practices in Bonerate Village, identify the main challenges faced by the community, and explore potential strategies for developing a more sustainable waste management system in coastal areas. This research used a qualitative approach, with data collected through field observation, in-depth interviews with relevant stakeholders, and document analysis. The findings show that waste management in Bonerate Village is still not optimal. Several obstacles were identified, including limited waste collection infrastructure, lack of proper final disposal facilities, low public awareness regarding waste separation and reduction, and limited support from local government institutions. In many cases, waste is still managed through conventional practices, such as burning, open dumping, or disposal into the surrounding environment, which may negatively affect coastal ecosystems. However, the study also found that Bonerate Village has strong potential to improve its waste management system through active community participation, environmental education, local regulations, and the use of simple environmentally friendly technologies. Community-based waste management, waste sorting, recycling programs, and collaboration between local government, community groups, and environmental organizations are recommended as key strategies. Overall, sustainable waste management in Bonerate Village requires an integrated approach that combines infrastructure improvement, behavioral change, institutional support, and continuous community involvement.
